Day 1

Limoges, The City of Precise Gestures

First steps in Limoges among medieval enamels, porcelain craftsmanship and a stroll along the Vienne River.

capital of craftsmanship

Morning
Begin with what defines Limoges most deeply: material. At the Fine Arts Museum, medieval enamels capture the light and tell the story of a long-standing artistic tradition. On the ground floor, painted landscapes of the Creuse Valley appear. You quickly understand that the city is in dialogue with its surrounding territory.

Afternoon & Evening
Continue through the Cité district and along the Vienne River. Medieval streets, bridges and riverbanks reveal how Limoges was built between water and workshops.
End the day on a terrace, sampling the culinary specialities of the Limousin.

tip

Prepare for your visit

In Limoges, there’s no need for a car: the historic centre can be explored on foot, electric bikes are available for self-service hire, and public transport is free at weekends. To enhance your visit, the Archistoire app offers an augmented reality tour (building reconstructions, drone flights inside the cathedral, 360° images) to see the city from a perspective that no paper guidebook can offer. There are also guided tours…

Day 2

Crozant & the Valley of the Painters

Discover the spectacular landscapes of Crozant that inspired the Impressionists, between gorges, rivers and changing light.

When Landscape Becomes a Canvas

Morning
Head to Crozant, at the confluence of the Creuse and Sédelle rivers. Fortress ruins dominate deep gorges, wooded meanders and dramatic relief. It is immediately clear why Impressionist painters came here in search of light.

Afternoon & Evening
Walk along the trails overlooking the valley and beside the river. The landscape constantly shifts; a mill appears around a bend. Take out your sketchbook!
Return to Limoges in the evening to continue your gastronomic explorations.

An open-air studio

Great French artists of the 19th century fell under the spell of the Creuse Valley. Everything there ‘ignites the imagination,’ wrote George Sand. Monet set up his easel there, as did many others.

Day 3

Monts de Blond

Hike among granite chaos and megaliths before strolling through Mortemart, one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Granite, Heathland and a Timeless Village

Morning
Set off for the Monts de Blond. No crowds here — only panoramic landscapes dotted with granite chaos formations and heathland. Trails wind between megaliths, standing stones and legendary rocks, passing through traditional villages. Several accessible hikes explore this modest but characterful mountain range.

Afternoon & Evening
Nearby lies a true gem: Mortemart, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Arcades, the Carmelite convent and historic market halls invite you to wander. Small shops and countryside viewpoints add charm. And likely, a good table for dinner!

Day 4

Oradour-sur-Glane & Saint-Junien

A powerful day combining historical memory in Oradour and discovering leather craftsmanship in Saint-Junien.

Memory and Material

Morning
Visit the Oradour-sur-Glane Memorial Centre, followed by the preserved martyr village. The site commands respect and silence. This stage gives the journey particular depth.

Afternoon & Evening
A few kilometres away, the Leather City (Cité du Cuir) in Saint-Junien tells another story — that of a living craftsmanship recognised internationally. The contrast between memory and contemporary industry makes for a powerful day. Return to Limoges in the evening.

Remembrance tourism

This is the name given to visits to specific historical heritage sites. As Limousin was a stronghold of the Resistance, several museums and sites are linked to the Second World War.

Day 5

Nontron & Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park

Explore the arts and crafts of Nontron, then immerse yourself in the peaceful forests of the regional nature park.

Carved Wood and Living Forests

Morning
In Nontron, craftsmanship is everywhere. The famous Nontron knife, with its hand-engraved boxwood handle, is just the beginning. The Experimental Crafts Hub (PEMA) showcases contemporary creation: designers, ceramicists and wood or textile artisans reinvent local skills.
As you stroll through the centre, step into workshops — here a knife-maker, there a craftsperson. In Nontron, craftsmanship is not frozen behind glass; it is alive.

Afternoon
In the afternoon, explore the trails of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. An easy hike leads into deep forests punctuated by discreet rivers and clearings. Steps slow down, sounds fade, and the landscape reveals itself at human scale.
A simple, grounded end to the journey, definitively linking craftsmanship to the landscapes that gave birth to it.
