Elegant Harbours, Luminous Islands and Ocean Horizons

Atlantic Coast for Two

This journey always begins with water. A harbour awakening in the morning light, a boat slipping away from the quay, an island setting its rhythm with the first turns of the pedals, an estuary opening onto the Atlantic like a deep breath. Designed for two, this itinerary links crossings and atmospheres: maritime cities, salt marshes, distinctive architecture and horizons that seem endless. A different way to discover the Atlantic coast — more sensitive than seaside, more contemplative than touristic.

Day 1

La Rochelle

Medieval towers in the morning light, the scent of the open sea, boats gently rocking — La Rochelle captures the mood immediately.

First Steps to the Rhythm of the Harbour

Morning: Arrival in La Rochelle, a city long turned toward the ocean. Follow the sea breeze to the Old Port, where the Tour Saint-Nicolas and Tour de la Chaîne have guarded the harbour entrance since the 14th century, seemingly indifferent to the movement of sailing boats. Wander along the quays, stroll beneath the arcades of the historic centre and admire the Renaissance façades. A first walk without plans — simply to take in the atmosphere.

Afternoon & Evening: Dive into the marine world at La Rochelle Aquarium, one of the largest in Europe. Soft lighting, slow movements and a nearly meditative calm. Tanks follow one another in a peaceful atmosphere, surprisingly suited to quiet contemplation for two. Translucent jellyfish, silent rays gliding past, reconstructed tropical reefs. You leave with the feeling of having travelled far without leaving the city. At the end of the day, return to the harbour for a drink on a terrace facing the forest of masts, followed by dinner in the historic centre.

Day 2

La Rochelle & the Coast

Ramparts, estuary landscapes and oyster beds — La Rochelle also reveals its story beyond the city walls.

Understanding the Sea and Those Who Live From It

Morning: Start with a visit to the Old Port Towers. From the ramparts of the Tour Saint-Nicolas, the view stretches across harbour, city and ocean in a single panorama. From here, it becomes clear why La Rochelle was once one of Europe’s most strategic maritime strongholds. A lookout point over centuries of history.

Afternoon & Evening: Head towards the nearby coast, to the oyster-farming marshes of the Baie de l’Aiguillon or around Châtelaillon, to meet a local producer. Taste oysters beside the saltwater basins, discuss traditions passed down through generations, breathe in the scent of sea air and tides. The perfect setting for a quiet moment.

Alternative: Explore the colourful Gabut district or the lively market halls of La Rochelle for a more intimate side of the city.

The smart pass

To explore La Rochelle without any constraints, the La Rochelle Océan Pass opens the doors to more than 50 sites — aquarium, tours, cruises — and gives you unlimited access to public transport. A single pass, activated on your phone, for two days without worrying about logistics.

Day 3

A Charente Island

A bridge, a few turns of the pedals — and the mainland already feels far away.

Slow Down, Breathe, Observe

Morning: Cross to a Charente island:

  • Île de Ré, known for its white villages with blue shutters, rose-lined streets and elegant atmosphere
  • Île d’Oléron, wilder and more natural, with pine forests and quieter beaches

From the moment you arrive, the rhythm changes. Bicycles replace cars as you follow cycling paths between beaches, fishing villages and wide open landscapes where the wind sets the pace.

Afternoon & Evening: Continue through the salt marshes. Pools appear one after another in geometric patterns, reflecting changing light : silvery in the morning, pink in the evening. Pause to observe the patient work of a salt farmer and listen to the distinctive silence of these flat landscapes where even the wind seems to sing.
In Loix on Île de Ré or the Brouage marshes near Oléron, the scenery feels almost unreal.
Return at the end of the day with the feeling of having stepped briefly outside of time.

Alternative: A wild beach or a small oyster harbour, depending on the tide and the mood.

Light up your journey

From La Rochelle to Île de Ré, lighthouses punctuate this trip like bright landmarks. The red Gabut lighthouse and the green Quai Valin lighthouse watch over the Old Port, the Bout du Monde lighthouse pays tribute to the great navigators and Jules Verne from the Pointe des Minimes, and the Phare des Baleines lighthouse has dominated the western tip of Île de Ré since 1854.

Day 4

Royan

A seaside town rebuilt with bold curves in the 1950s — Royan surprises, and that’s exactly its charm.

at a glance

Architecture, Estuary and Evening Light

Morning: Drive to Royan, a seaside resort with a distinctive identity. Destroyed by 85% in 1945, the town was rebuilt in a resolutely modern style. The result is striking.
The Notre-Dame Basilica of Royan, a masterpiece of raw concrete designed by Guillaume Gillet and Marc Hébrard, dominates the city with its futuristic silhouette. Along the seafront, sweeping Art-Deco-inspired curves frame the Grande Conche beach, dotted with colourful bathing cabins. Royan embraces its diversity with unexpected elegance.

Afternoon & Evening: The afternoon opens onto the Gironde Estuary, the largest in Western Europe. From the Pointe de Grave or Royan’s waterfront, the water seems broader, more mineral, filled with a unique light that belongs only to this place where river meets ocean.
Towards evening, settle on a terrace facing the estuary and watch the light slowly fade across the water. One of those moments that cannot be planned. They simply happen, and stay with you.

Day 5

Gironde Estuary

A crossing, a lighthouse standing alone at sea — the feeling of following the ocean to its final horizon.

The Atlantic at Its Grandest

Morning: The last experience is unforgettable: crossing the estuary. The ferry links Royan to the Pointe de Grave in around twenty minutes. A short crossing that shifts your perspective — the estuary seen from the water, the shores drifting apart, the current pulling steadily.
For an even greater finale, take the maritime excursion to the Cordouan Lighthouse. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, nicknamed the “King of Lighthouses”, it stands in the middle of the estuary like a magnificent anomaly: a Renaissance tower rising from a sandbank kilometres from any shore.

Afternoon: Return to the right bank of the estuary or continue along the left bank towards Bordeaux, passing through the renowned vineyards of the Médoc. Either way, the journey ends with the feeling of having followed a thread — blue — from harbour to island, from estuary to horizon, without ever forcing the journey.

The Atlantic reveals itself generously to those who take the time.

did you know?

Royan’s 1950s Modernist Architecture

After World War II, Royan was rebuilt as a bold laboratory of modern architecture. Iconic landmarks such as the striking Notre-Dame Church, the shell-shaped Royan Central Market (Les Halles) and the elegant 1950s seaside villas showcase the creativity and optimism of this reconstruction era. Walking through the city reveals one of France’s most remarkable examples of post-war modernist architecture by the Atlantic coast.
