This journey unfolds like a crossing. Rather than jumping from one site to another, you follow a natural thread, shaped by the river, its uses and its landscapes.
You enter the Charente through a line of ink, and leave it facing the Atlantic. In between, a river you follow almost without realising it: from Angoulême to Rochefort, via Cognac and Saintes, the landscape shifts, opens up and widens. Each stop offers a new perspective, while remaining easily accessible by train or soft mobility.

Day 1

Angoulême

Walk along the ramparts and, already, the Charente flows below.

Sketching the Landscape 

Morning
Arrive in Angoulême by train, then make your way up to the plateau. Very quickly, the view opens from the ramparts: the Charente Valley stretches out, wide and calm.
Following the trail of painted walls (Rue Hergé, Place du Palet), the city becomes an open book. Facades tell the stories of Lucky Luke, Corto Maltese or Titeuf, seamlessly integrated into the urban landscape.

Afternoon & Evening
At the International City of Comics and Image, housed in former warehouses along the Charente, discover original artwork, creative processes and graphic styles.

At the end of the day, head back down towards the river to see the city from below, before choosing a locally sourced restaurant for dinner in the historic centre.

Cognac

Enter Cognac along the riverbanks, facing the aligned ageing cellars.

Understanding What a Landscape Produces 

Morning
After checking in, head towards the Charente within minutes. The ageing cellars of houses such as Hennessy and Martell line the river. The black stains on the walls reveal the distilleries: the famous “angel’s share” leaving its mark.
At the Cognac Arts Museum, follow the entire process: grape varieties, distillation, ageing. You touch, smell and understand.

Afternoon & Evening
With the Cultural Distillers, take a different approach: alternative visits, sensory routes and sometimes artistic experiences inside cellars and distilleries. Cognac becomes a living experience.

End the day with a stroll through the town and along the riverbanks towards Parc François Ier, or settle on a terrace to enjoy a local cocktail.

Following the River Up Close

Morning
From Cognac, join the Flow Vélo, which follows the Charente closely. The route is flat, easy, and rarely leaves the river.
You pass through Châteaubernard, then landscapes open up: wetlands, tall grasses and reflections in the water.

Afternoon & Evening
At Port-d’Envaux, stop to visit the Lapidiales, sculptures carved directly into the rock.
Further on, Chaniers marks your approach to Saintes. You arrive at the end of the day along the river, with a real sense of progression.

Saintes

A city where history is heard as much as it is seen.

Morning
The Gallo-Roman amphitheatre reveals itself almost unexpectedly, nestled in a valley. You descend into the arena, climb the seating, and quickly understand its proportions, circulation and acoustics. The site feels alive, easy to imagine.
Then head to the Abbaye aux Dames. Behind its Romanesque façade and distinctive “pinecone” bell tower lies a vibrant cultural space. Visit with 3D sound headphones: voices, music and storytelling transform the experience.
In the courtyard, the musical carousel invites curiosity: giant instruments activated by movement. You play without knowing how — and it works! The abbey is not just a monument, but a place of creation.

Afternoon & Evening
Head back down towards the Charente, wider here, almost still. Tree-lined quays invite you to stroll.
A traditional gabarre boat ride reveals the river’s role in trade and transport, offering a new perspective on the city.
As evening falls, light glides across the golden façades of the historic centre. You linger without really deciding to leave.

Rochefort

Where Everything Opens to the Atlantic

Morning
In Rochefort, the Martrou transporter bridge crosses the river in a slow, suspended motion above the water. An experience in itself.
At the Arsenal des Mers, the Corderie Royale immediately impresses: 374 metres long along the Charente. Here you understand how ropes for the entire French navy were made.
The visit continues with the National Maritime Museum, the Arsenal workshops, and Accro-Mâts, a suspended adventure park.

Afternoon
A change of atmosphere with the house of Pierre Loti — naval officer, writer and passionate collector. Step into a completely different world: oriental décor, theatrical staging, boundless imagination. The journey ends here, at the meeting point between river and ocean.
