Day 1

Biarritz on the coast side

Discover the elegance of Belle Époque Biarritz, where ocean meets imperial heritage

Imperial Elegance and Atlantic Spray

WHERE WAVES MEET HISTORY

Morning: first Steps Facing the Ocean. A few minutes’ walk from the station, and the historic center reveals its Belle Époque villas. The Grande Plage stretches out in a ribbon of blond sand, the Hôtel du Palais displays its imperial facade. The Atlantic wind whips your face, carrying the smell of iodine and fresh seaweed. Climb up to the Rocher de la Vierge. Waves crash against the cliffs, the noise is deafening, hypnotic. The view embraces the entire bay to the Spanish coast. Descend to the Port des Pêcheurs, where colorful boats rock in the intimate atmosphere of the sheltered haven.

Afternoon & Evening: Ocean Immersion. The Cité de l’Océan plunges you into the marine depths between giant projections and sensory experiences. Late afternoon, head to the Halles de Biarritz. Under the metal framework, stalls overflow with cheeses, hams, Espelette peppers that tickle the nostrils. On the terrace, Ossau-Iraty melts on the tongue, Irouléguy wine slides down with notes of red berries. Sunset at Côte des Basques: surfers in black silhouettes against the orange horizon, water turned liquid gold. Sit on the still-warm sand and watch the day tip over.

Wellness and Surf Culture

RIDE THE WAVES, EMBRACE THE CALM

Morning: wave Baptism. Early morning meeting at Grande Plage or Côte des Basques. Schools provide wetsuits and boards. The water is cool but invigorating. Wait for the wave, stand up, glide. Salt on the lips, laughter shared between falls. An hour passes like ten minutes.

Afternoon: wellness Break. Head to a spa facing the ocean. Hot water contrasts with the morning’s marine freshness. Jets massage, oils perfume the air, bay windows frame the horizon. The sound of waves becomes a lullaby. Later, stroll along the waterfront. Bare feet on wooden planks, velvety evening air. Dinner showcases the terroir: melt-in-your-mouth axoa de veau, crispy grilled chipirons, Basque cake with black cherry jam. Each bite tells the story of the land.

Day 3

SAINT-JEAN-DE-LUZ

Explore a charming corsair town and walk the spectacular coastal corniche.

Corsair Charm and Protected Bay

WHERE THE BAY SHELTERS TIMELESS BEAUTY

Accessible by TER from Biarritz (about 20 minutes)

Morning: Corsair Town. The train follows the coast. Saint-Jean-de-Luz appears nestled in its protected bay, calmer, more intimate than Biarritz. The Louis XIV house dominates the square with its green shutters and pink facade. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church surprises with its all-gilded-wood baroque interior. Shopping streets invite wandering: colorful espadrilles, fragrant chocolate shops, local fishermen’s tuna preserves. The port keeps its village soul. Nets dry, boats rock, seagulls squawk.

Afternoon & Evening: Panoramic Corniche. The Basque Corniche links Saint-Jean-de-Luz to Hendaye. On foot or by bike, the route unfolds spectacular panoramas. Ochre cliffs plunge into the Atlantic, the path winds between sea and hill. Ciboure appears on the other side of the Nivelle, then Hendaye and the Spanish mountains. Dinner facing the bay: low-angle light, candles on tables, soft conversations. Intimacy settles naturally.

Day 4

AINHOA & SARE

Step into picture-perfect Basque villages and meet local artisan producers.

WHERE TRADITION LIVES IN EVERY STONE

Basque Villages & Local Craftsmanship

About 40 minutes from Biarritz

Morning: Ainhoa, Living Postcard. Ranked among France’s Most Beautiful Villages, Ainhoa unfolds a single street lined with Labourdin houses with red or green half-timbering and geranium-filled balconies. The silence surprises after the coast. You hear your footsteps on the cobblestones, birdsong, the chime of a bell. The deserted fronton, the massive white church. Take time to push open a workshop door, exchange a few words, sit on a terrace. Here, you breathe.

Afternoon: Sare and Its Traditions. The prehistoric Grottes de Sare (Sare caves) burrow into the mountain. Inside, temperature drops, humidity, glistening stalactites. The guide tells the millennial history. The real encounter happens at a local producer’s. Ossau-Iraty cheese aged in humid cellars: firm but creamy texture, nutty taste. Or Espelette peppers drying on facades. The producer explains the PDO, hand harvesting, meticulous drying. You leave with a full heart and the impression of having touched the Basque soul. Return to Biarritz for the evening. The city lights already twinkle in the distance. One last walk along the waterfront, perhaps, before heading to a table for dinner.

Day 5

BAYONNE

Immerse yourself in Basque culture and savor the city’s legendary chocolate heritage.

WHERE CULTURE AND COCOA INTERTWINE

Basque Culture & Chocolate Sweetness

Morning: Dive into Basque Identity. Bayonne, cultural capital of the Basque Country, vibrates with urban, dense energy. The Basque Museum gathers traditional costumes, agricultural tools, musical instruments, old photographs. You better understand this quiet pride, this language that resists, these perpetuating traditions. Wander through Petit Bayonne: colorful facades squeezed along the Nive, reflections dancing on the water, bridges following one another. The atmosphere is lively, almost festive.

Afternoon: Chocolate and Final Wanderings. Bayonne and chocolate, a love story since the 17th century. Chocolate shops smell of cocoa from the entrance. Behind display cases: tablets with Espelette pepper, hazelnuts, Salies-de-Béarn salt. The chocolate melts slowly, sweet, bitter, comforting. Final hours in the alleyways: shaded arcades, artisan shops, terraces for a last coffee. The trip is ending. Suitcases are heavier, but mostly the heart is full of images, flavors, of this Basque sweetness that already makes you want to return.

Our tips for enjoying your stay

  • Travel off-season for intimacy: Visit in spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) to enjoy quieter beaches, warmer locals, and better rates. The Basque Country shines beautifully outside peak summer months.
  • Pack for changeable weather: Coastal weather shifts quickly: bring layers, a light rain jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. Sunny mornings can turn breezy by afternoon, especially near the ocean.
  • Book surf lessons in advance: During high season, surf schools fill up quickly. Reserve your spot online a few days ahead, especially for morning sessions when conditions are typically best.
  • Embrace slow travel by train: The regional TER trains connect Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and Bayonne seamlessly. Skip the car rental, you’ll enjoy stress-free coastal views and authentic local rhythms instead.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some practical answers to the most common questions, to help you plan your stay with ease and confidence.

May to June and September to October offer the perfect balance: pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the ocean still warm enough for swimming. July and August are busiest but vibrant with festivals. Winter brings dramatic waves and cozy spa retreats.

Absolutely. Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and Bayonne are connected by frequent TER trains (10-20 minutes between cities). For Day 4 (Ainhoa & Sare), consider joining a guided tour or renting a car just for that day—both villages are harder to reach by public transport.

English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants, especially in Biarritz. Learning a few basic French phrases (“bonjour,” “merci,” “l’addition s’il vous plaît”) goes a long way. Don’t worry about Basque—locals happily switch to French or English.

Completely. While surf culture defines Biarritz, the city offers elegant architecture, coastal walks, thalassotherapy spas, gourmet dining, and easy access to cultural sites. You’ll enjoy the surf vibe without ever touching a board: though trying once is unforgettable.
