Day 1 – First Steps in Pau: Between Heritage and Panoramas

Morning : Arrival in Pau by train. From the station, the city center can be explored on foot. A guided walk leads to the Boulevard des Pyrénées, a wide balcony opening onto the mountain chain, then to the Château de Pau, birthplace of Henri IV. The route continues through theHédas quarter, a former suburb now rehabilitated, before a pause in the Beaumont garden.

Afternoon : Ride aboard the funicular to connect the station to the historic center, then free time to stroll through the shopping streets. In the late afternoon, tasting at the Pavillon du Vin de Jurançon becomes an intimate moment: comparing aromas, exchanging impressions, before extending the break over a coffee in the old center.

Morning : Departure by car from Pau (20 to 30 min) towards the villages of Gan and Monein. The hillsides follow one another, dotted with vineyards and Bearnese houses. Visit to the Jurançon producers’ cellar in Gan, then visits to Domaine Capdevielle or Château Lafitte which feel like moments for two, punctuated by exchanges with the winemakers and commented tastings. Between glasses, the wine landscapes offer a setting conducive to pauses and souvenir photos.

Afternoon : Drive to Monein to discover Domaine Castera. Exchanges with the winemakers allow understanding of the particularities of the soils and climate. Return at the end of the day to the accommodation, through the rolling landscapes of the piedmont.

Morning : Departure by car to Fabrèges (around 1h15 from Pau). A first stop at Lake Fabrèges offers an immediate change of scale: fresh air, still water and the surrounding peaks set the tone for the day.
Board the Artouste mountain train, one of the highest in Europe. Its slow pace allows couples to sit back and take in the scenery together, as the track follows the contours of the mountain. Wide panoramas open over the Ossau Valley, creating a quiet, almost timeless atmosphere.

Afternoon : Descent back into the valley and drive to Bielle for a visit to an artisanal Ossau-Iraty cheese dairy. The cool cellar, the scent of milk and the tasting offer a simple and sensory introduction to local know-how.
The day continues through the mountain villages of Bielle and Bedous, where stone houses, narrow streets and surrounding pastures invite a slow stroll. These quiet villages offer a gentle transition between altitude and valley life.

Morning: Short drive to Laruns, a lively mountain village at the heart of the Ossau Valley. From here, set out on a guided walk with a professional guide from the Ossau Valley Mountain Office (“Bureau Montagne”). For moreexperienced hikers, sections of the legendary GR10 long-distance trail pass through the valley, offering challenging terrain and breathtaking high-altitude scenery. The route is chosen according to the couple’s level and conditions, allowing time to walk side by side, observe the landscape and listen to the sounds of the mountain: flowing water, wind in the grass, distant bells.

Afternoon : Return to Laruns for a relaxed afternoon in the village. A stroll along the river, a pause on a terrace or a walk through the streets provide time to unwind and reflect on the shared experience.
The rhythm remains free and unhurried, leaving space for conversation and quiet moments together.

In the coolness of the morning, the city reveals itself at a leisurely pace: narrow streets, small squares, water reflections, and this impression of walking along an ancient stage. The visit to Sainte-Marie Cathedral, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes, provides a simple and powerful setting: ideal for taking time, side by side, without rushing.

Afternoon : Return to Pau (about 45–50 min). On the road, keep a pause “just for two”: a viewpoint, a café, a few minutes in the sun. In Pau, end the trip with a final walk on the Boulevard des Pyrénées: the late afternoon light is often gentle, and the panorama lends itself well to travel reviews and plans for the next departure.
