Waves, Pottoks and Living Traditions

Basque Country with Kids

  • Accessible by train

You arrive in Biarritz with vacation energy buzzing. The air smells like ocean, the kids are already running toward the beach, and mountains sketch the horizon in the distance. Day 1

Biarritz, the city of all desires

First contact with the ocean and its creatures: sharks, jellyfish, and sandcastles.

WHEN THE SEA REVEALS ITS SECRETS

Aquarium & Grande Plage

Morning: You start at Biarritz Aquarium, right across from Rocher de la Vierge. From the entrance, the sound of water creates a soothing atmosphere. Kids press their noses against the glass: translucent jellyfish pulsing like cosmic parachutes, majestic sharks gliding silently, playful seals clowning around in their pool. The touch tank is a hit: touching a slimy starfish is weird, kind of gross, but everyone does it again anyway. The iodine smell still lingers as you exit, with the blue immensity of the Atlantic right there.

Afternoon & Evening: Head to Grande Plage, just steps away. The sand is soft under bare feet, scattered with shells to collect. While some build castles with elaborate fortifications, waves roll in their steady rhythm, perfect for safe splashing. The sun beats down gently. Children’s laughter mingles with seagull cries. A few surfers pass offshore, black silhouettes against the sparkling backdrop. Late afternoon brings artisan ice cream at Dod’s (agonizing choice between salted caramel and strawberry basil) or crêpes near Port des Pêcheurs. The sun slowly descends over the Atlantic, tinting everything orange and pink. First day: validated.

Day 2

Biarritz : ocean spirit

Surf for all levels and virtual deep-sea diving around the world.

STANDING ON THE BOARD (OR ALMOST)

First Waves & Surf Culture

Morning: Meet at Hastea Surf School on Côte des Basques. The wetsuits are a bit chilly (understatement), sand sticks to feet, but excitement is palpable. The instructors – tanned and relaxed as they should be – explain how to stand on the board: “Knees, feet, arms spread, eyes forward.” Easy, right? Except you fall. You laugh. You swallow a mouthful of salty water. You try again. And then, miracle: first successful wave. Standing for maybe three seconds, but standing nonetheless. Guaranteed pride for everyone, especially Dad who won’t stop talking about it for the rest of the day.

Afternoon: After the effort, some (fun) science. Head to Cité de l’Océan. Virtual reality headsets that plunge you among whales, interactive experiences discovering ocean currents, simulators that shake you in all directions: here you learn tons about the oceans without noticing time fly. Kids love it. Parents too, let’s be honest. Relaxed vibe in town center. A stroll to digest, maybe one last Grande Plage visit to see the ocean at blue hour. The sound of waves becomes a lullaby.

Day 3

La Rhune: a mountain and a train like no other

The little red train climbs toward the clouds while pottoks graze peacefully.

UP, UP WE GO… AND THE VIEW IS CRAZY

Legendary Mountain Train & XXL Panorama

Morning: You board the Petit Train de la Rhune. Wooden carriages creaking gently, century-old rack railway gripping the rails, slow climb through green meadows. The little train bumps, turns, rises. The conductor comments on the route in French and Basque. Sometimes pottoks appear in the ferns. Kids shout “Look, a pony!” every time. At the summit (905 meters, no less), the panorama opens 360 degrees: the Atlantic Ocean sparkles on one side, the Pyrenees unfold their ridges on the other, and the Spanish coast sketches itself in the distance. Wind whips faces. You take a thousand photos. Even grumpy teen admits “yeah, it’s not bad.”

Afternoon: You descend (legs trembling slightly) and enjoy a gentle walk around Col de Saint-Ignace. The wind carries the smell of warm grass and wildflowers. Picnic facing the mountains. Basque cheese, fresh bread, market tomatoes: simplicity at its best.

DID YOU KNOW?

LAND OF THE POTTOKS

La Rhune is home to the iconic Basque pottoks, small semi-wild horses that have lived on these slopes for centuries. As the train climbs through the heathland, they often appear unexpectedly, moving quietly across the landscape just as they always have.

Day 4

SARE

Underground exploration and meeting sheep (and their cheese).

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH

Mysterious Caves and Sheep Cheese

Morning: You explore the Grottes de Sare (Sare Cave). From the first steps inside, temperature drops: welcome coolness after outside heat. Limestone walls shine under colored lighting, creating mysterious shadows. Water drips somewhere in the dark, echoing like a natural clock. The guide tells stories of prehistoric life in these millennial cavities: where they slept, how they hunted, what they ate. Kids imagine cavemen with animal skins, torches and mammoths (okay, there weren’t mammoths here, but let them dream). Stalactites hang like giant icicles. You exit squinting, dazzled by daylight.

Afternoon: You meet a producer at Fromagerie Onetik or a local farm around Sare. Sheep graze peacefully on the hills, their bells tinkling softly. You smell warm milk, slightly sweet. In the aging cellar, the aroma becomes stronger, almost sharp. The producer explains the whole process: milking, curdling, molding, aging. Kids discover how the famous Ossau-Iraty is born. Mandatory tasting: adults murmur “mmh, complex, nutty” while kids make faces (or not—some love it). You leave with a small cheese under your arm and memories filling your head.

Set in a 16th-century Basque house in the heart of Sare, Hôtel Arraya offers an authentic retreat, where historic beams, regional cuisine and mountain serenity create a warm and intimate escape.

Day 5

BAYONNE

Basque pelota and hot chocolate: Basque culture, fun and tasty version.

WHEN THE BALL SMACKS AND CHOCOLATE MELTS

Basque Pelota and Chocolate

10 minutes by regional train from Biarritz

Morning: You visit the Basque Museum and Bayonne History Museum to understand where this unique culture comes from. Traditional red and white costumes, ancient musical instruments, black and white photos: each room tells a piece of history. Kids are especially fascinated by masquerades and festival giants. Then you head to a fronton for Basque pelota initiation with a local instructor. The chistera (that curved basket thing attached to your hand) is heavier than it looks. The leather ball smacks against the wall with a sharp, satisfying crack. Laughter echoes across the square when someone spectacularly misses their shot.

Afternoon: You end beautifully at Maison Cazenave for old-fashioned hot chocolate. Intense cocoa aroma envelops the entire room. The chocolate is thick, velvety, almost too rich but absolutely perfect. You dip churros in it (or macarons for purists). Final stroll along the Nive, where colorful facades reflect in the calm water. Suitcases are a bit heavier (the chocolate, the cheese, the souvenirs), but mostly, hearts are full.

Hôtel OKKO, Bayonne / OKKO Hotels

Your accomodation

OKKO Hotels****

Ideally located in the heart of Bayonne, OKKO Hotels offers a contemporary and welcoming experience, featuring bright spaces, an all-day club lounge and a modern approach to urban hospitality.

Good to know

Our tips for enjoying your stay

  • Book the Rhune train in advance: During high season, seats sell out fast. Book online a few days ahead to avoid disappointment. First and last trains of the day are often less crowded.
  • Favor regional train travel: Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Bayonne are super well connected by train. It avoids parking stress and kids love train travel. Bonus: you enjoy the scenery.
  • Pack windbreaker AND sunscreen Basque weather plays hopscotch: blazing sun in the morning, drizzle in the afternoon. A light windbreaker and good sunscreen (the sun hits hard even under clouds) are your best friends.
  • Keep some free time: With kids, it’s better to schedule blocks of “nothing” than try to see everything. An afternoon at the beach with nothing planned is sometimes the best memory they keep.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some practical answers to the most common questions, to help you plan your stay with ease and confidence.

Absolutely. Beaches are supervised, museums are interactive, and most activities (aquarium, caves, Rhune train) captivate even the youngest. Distances are short, avoiding those dreaded long journeys.

Yes. Certified schools offer age-appropriate lessons on gentle-wave beaches. Instructors are trained, equipment is provided, and you always start with safe basics. From age 6-7, you’re good to go!

Not necessarily. Biarritz, Bayonne and Saint-Jean-de-Luz are linked by frequent regional trains. For Day 3 (La Rhune) and Day 4 (Sare), a car or bus is practical, but organized excursions also exist. You can easily do 3 out of 5 days car-free.

June-September for beach and good weather. July-August are most lively (and crowded). May-June or September offer an excellent compromise: pleasant weather, fewer people, and the ocean still warm enough for swimming.
