A holiday dedicated to the good life

Family Holidays in Southwest France

  • Nérac

All the ingredients of the Southwest come together here. In bastide towns and medieval villages, it’s a pleasure to wander, step into an artisan’s workshop or fill your basket with perfectly ripe fruit. From the Henri IV castle-museum in Nérac to the fortified mill of Barbaste, French history unfolds at a gentle pace.
Outdoor activities are just as present! Landscapes shift between the rolling hills of Gascony and forests of pine or cork oak, an ancestral culture still very much alive.

Day 1

Nérac

Discover Nérac through its heritage, shaded park and a first stroll along the Baïse River.

In the Footsteps of Henri IV

Morning
Start with the Henri IV Castle-Museum, in the heart of Nérac. The rooms tell the story of the Albret family (first floor) and Renaissance lifestyle (ground floor). Children enjoy following a dedicated discovery trail designed just for them.

Just next door lies the Parc de la Garenne, a former royal garden. Shaded paths, statues and fountains invite you to slow down. It is said that the expression “conter fleurette” (to flirt) was born here, inspired by the romantic adventures of the young Henri and the gardener’s daughter, named Fleurette.

Afternoon & Evening
In the afternoon, head down to the Baïse River for a first outing, on foot, by bike or by boat. The river is calm, lined with trees, and the scenery drifts by slowly. End the day by the water, with no set plan.
In July and August, a lively night market takes place every Tuesday evening.

Royal Birthplaces

Another castle linked to Henri IV is located in Pau, at the foot of the Pyrenees, where he was born in 1553.
A century earlier, in another duchy of the region, François I was born in Cognac.
These stays take you to discover their birthplaces:

Day 2

Mézin & the Albret Countryside

Alternate between local heritage and meeting a producer. A day that smells of wood, earth and Southwest flavours.

Local Craft & Gourmet Pleasures

Morning
Head to Mézin (approx. 25 min). Rent bikes and follow the greenway, built on a former railway line, part of the major cycling route La Scandibérique.
The route is flat, safe and crosses open countryside between fields and woodland. You move at your own pace, with regular stops.

Afternoon & Evening
After a picnic in the shade, visit the Cork and Bottle Stopper Museum, an unusual place that tells the story of a once essential local industry. The visit is very concrete, with objects, machines and demonstrations that also appeal to children.

Nearby, visit the Gagnet Farm. Discover the farm, its products, and end with a tasting. Exchanges are simple and direct, often a highlight for both children and adults.

Local Producers

You’ll need to confirm Gascony’s reputation as a land of plenty, won’t you? This very serious investigation takes place in markets, farm visits and local restaurants. Strangely, instead of keeping your eyes open, you close them to taste better.

Day 3

Lavardac & Vianne

Start with a lively market, then explore two bastide towns and a vineyard.
A morning among stalls and arcades, an afternoon among vines and tastings.

Market, Bastides and Vineyard

Morning
Head to Lavardac for the market. Stalls fill the streets, local products are tasted, and the atmosphere is simple, lively and family-friendly.

Then explore the village before heading to Vianne, a remarkable example of a medieval bastide. Enter through the fortified gate, reach the central square, and walk beneath the arcades in the shade.
You can also visit the glassblowing museum.

Afternoon & Evening
In the afternoon, head to Buzet-sur-Baïse for a visit to the Vignerons de Buzet winery.
The site is modern and accessible, making it easy to understand the vineyard. The visit is also designed for children, who can enjoy grape juice tastings.

Artisan Crafts

Holidays are also about taking time to meet local creators. Step into a shop or workshop, have a conversation, and discover handmade souvenirs crafted with care.

Day 4

Barbaste

Morning among stone walls, afternoon in water and play.

Between Fortified Mill and Outdoor Activities

Morning
In Barbaste, the Moulin des Tours immediately impresses. Standing beside the Gélise River, its massive towers offer a vivid image of the Middle Ages.
Extend the visit with a short walk around the site.

Alternative: canoe trip past the mill, to see it from the river.

Afternoon & Evening
In the afternoon, head to Cap Cauderoue, nearby. The leisure park offers 10 treetop adventure courses, including one for children aged 3–6.
You can also enjoy the snack bar and try other activities: treasure hunt, disc golf, pony rides, catapult games or the sensory barefoot trail.

A good night’s sleep is guaranteed!

One last stroll in Nérac: streets, riverbanks, park or a café terrace. Revisit the places from the beginning and say goodbye.

Afternoon
Then head to Agen (approx. 30 min), the main city of the department. Highlights include:

  • the canal bridge over the Garonne
  • the Fine Arts Museum
