First Steps Between City and River

Morning
Settle in Limoges, then take a walk along the banks of the Vienne River. The quays are easy and pleasant? perfect for stretching your legs after travelling. Bridges, reflections and green spaces create a gentle introduction.

Afternoon & Evening
Visit the Four des Casseaux, a preserved 19th-century porcelain kiln. Here, the focus isn’t just on refined objects, but on heat, repeated gestures, rhythm and working life. You imagine the kilns blazing, the dust, the noise and the precision of the craft. The space is raw and impressive; a powerful immersion into Limoges’ industrial history that gives porcelain a new dimension.

In Limoges, there’s no need for a car: the historic centre can be explored on foot, electric bikes are available for self-service hire, and public transport is free at weekends. To enhance your visit, the Archistoire app offers an augmented reality tour (building reconstructions, drone flights inside the cathedral, 360° images) to see the city from a perspective that no paper guidebook can offer. There are also guided tours…

Underground

Beneath the streets of Limoges, another world awaits — cellars carved into tuff stone, medieval galleries, and a crypt rediscovered by chance in 1962 beneath Place de la République. The Undergrounds of La Règle and the Saint-Martial Crypt can be explored as a family, with seasonal workshops and games specially designed for children.

Day 3

Le Reynou & Châlucet Castle

Woven Stories and Riverside Charm

Morning
Drive to Aubusson, world capital of tapestry, listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. At the International City of Tapestry, works are not simply hung on walls — some are monumental, colourful and even inspired by comics or contemporary creations. Looms, threads and preparatory drawings make it easy to understand how an image becomes textile. The exhibition design is clear, engaging and speaks equally to adults and children.

Afternoon & Evening
After the visit, stroll down towards the Creuse River. Aubusson reveals itself calmly, with stone bridges, old houses and sloping streets. The river brings freshness, façades tell the story of workshops and weavers. Pause for an ice cream or a coffee before heading back to Limoges;

A must-try

Le Creusois cake

Moist, with a unique nutty flavour, the ‘le creusois’ cake is one of the region’s gourmet specialities. Several bakeries in Aubusson make it. More generally, you will find these products at markets here and there.

Day 5

rochechouart

Explore a landscape shaped by a meteorite and visit the surprising Rochechouart Castle Museum of Contemporary Art.

Cosmic Impact and Unexpected Art

Morning: Head to Rochechouart, a territory marked by a meteorite impact nearly 200 million years ago. There is no dramatic crater visible, but you are standing within an ancient impact structure that transformed the local rocks. Interpretation panels and on-site explanations make the story accessible and fascinating — especially for children who love the idea that a piece of asteroid once struck here.

Afternoon: The Château de Rochechouart, with medieval and Renaissance influences, now houses a recognised contemporary art museum. The contrast works beautifully: modern artworks displayed in historic rooms, ancient frescoes alongside contemporary installations. The visit surprises and sparks discussion. From the castle grounds, wide views open over the surrounding valleys.

One More Idea

Cassinomagus Archaeological Park

In Chassenon (just a 6-minute drive from Rochechouart), the Cassinomagus Archaeological Park has everything planned so children won’t be bored for a second: Gallo-Roman costumes to try on as soon as you arrive, a fun activity booklet, an animal meadow, a mythological maze, outdoor ancient games, and hands-on workshops in mosaics or archaeology. Plan for half a day or a full day, depending on the energy of your crew. The site is also one of the best-preserved Gallo-Roman sites in Europe.
