But where are the cows? On the way to the village of Millevaches, you learn that the name has nothing to do with cattle, but comes from the Celtic “batz”, meaning “spring”, forming “mille batz” or “mille vacca” — “a thousand sources”.

Now that you know this, you begin to notice the many streams crossing your path. Your guide takes you to the source of the Vienne River.

At the Maison du Parc Naturel de Millevaches, you enjoy another unusual experience close to the stars. Set up your tent (provided as part of the trip) in the bivouac area at the heart of the park.

Head raised and eyes wide open, you gaze at a sky like you have never seen before. Hypnotised by this magical spectacle, you let the night surround you and the sounds of nocturnal life lull you to sleep.

The Roof of Limousin

A wooden walkway winds through the Longeyroux peat bog, one of the largest in the region. Informational panels explain this wetland, rich in discreet yet precious biodiversity.
Perched on a branch, a small shrike watches you pass. Nearby, a sundew, a fascinating carnivorous plant, slowly closes on its prey.

The climb to Mont Bessou offers a wonderful reward: from its summit at 977 metres, the view stretches across the Massif Central, from the Auvergne volcanoes to the mountains of Cantal.

The day ends in Meymac, with a restful night at the charming Hôtel Chez Françoise.

A Final Big Stage

Already the last day of this loop on the Millevaches Plateau. To end the journey beautifully, the route follows one of the last active railway lines, between green pastures and forests of deciduous and conifer trees.

A stop is worth making at the church of Barsanges, notable for its typical Limousin architecture. After passing through the peaceful village of Pérols-sur-Vézère, you arrive back in Bugeat, marking the end of this journey and the beginning of lasting memories.

  • Prepare for a physically demanding trip. The Millevaches Plateau is best explored on foot, often for several hours a day. The hikes require a good level of fitness, especially in changeable weather or on wet ground. It’s best to plan days that suit your pace and fitness level.
  • Planning your routes and maps. Before setting off, it’s a good idea to identify the loops and routes suited to your ability. The area offers numerous marked trails, but the distances can quickly catch you out
  • Check the hiking conditions. The plateau is vast and sparsely populated: it’s best to check the weather, the condition of the trails and refreshment points before setting off for the day.
  • Discover the services and stops along the route. Accommodation, water points, small grocery shops or places to take a break aren’t always obvious at first glance. Checking local resources allows you to plan ahead and walk with greater peace of mind.
